OSHA recently issued a proposed rule that would require employers to protect their employees from heat hazards in both outdoor and indoor work environments. The STI/SPFA Safety and Health and Legislative Advocacy Committees are currently working on comments to submit from STI/SPFA. Comments are being accepted until December 1, 2024.
If you have not done so already, we encourage you to review this proposed rule. This rule will affect our members in various ways, including:
Develop and implement a written worksite heat injury and illness prevention plan (HIIPP)
Conduct regular heat risk assessments and monitor workplace temperatures
Provide mandatory 15-minute paid breaks every two hours when the heat index is above 90°F
Provide cool drinking water and break areas with cooling measures
Have and maintain, for a minimum of six months, written or electronic records of indoor monitoring data
STI/SPFA would like to hear more from you on how this proposed rule will affect your business. Please submit your comments to STI/SPFA regarding the proposed rule here.
You are also encouraged to submit comments directly to OSHA on behalf of your own business.
