Set in a rocky and forested site near the Spokane River, the focus of this home is the site surrounding it. The client wanted a house that is in dialogue with the elements of earth, wind, water and fire, and the architecture responds by blurring the boundaries between inside and outside through materials, contrast and art.
The owner commissioned a site-specific art installation for her home. The artist conceived of an infinite room a kind of meditation space that is centered on a line drawn by connecting two mountain peaks visible from the site. The architectural team took information on the shape and dimensions of the bowl and developed the concept into architecture. Midway through construction, the half-completed infinite room is in dialogue with the entrance tower, resulting in a unique architectural conversation.
