Fabricated Project of the Year Entry #3 Product Description: 317L / AL6XN Absorber Tower with AL6XN Pre-Scrubber Vessel and Supporting Structural Frame Owner: Valero Benicia Refinery Location of Product: Benicia, CA Date of Completion: February 11, 2010 Date of Operation: December, 2010 Overall Height: 165’ Vessel with 100’ Stack Overall Length: 165’ Diameter: 31’ Vessel, 15’ Stack Special Features: Initially the project started as shop fabrication of (1) 31’diameter x 154’ high Absorber Tower with 15’ diameter x 100’ tall outlet stack. While in discussion with Valero’s engineering representative, the question came up in regards to coordination with the equipment erector at site. The available lay down space at the jobsite was very limited and with a 31’ diameter vessel to be erected, the contractor would need substantial space to complete their work. With this concern in mind, we came up with the concept of “modularizing” the vessel out of our shop. Within this concept it made sense to take on associated equipment within the area, so fabrication/erection of the Belco Pre-Scrubber 30’ diameter x 46’ high vessel and erection of the supporting structure were made apart of the contract. We were on site performing the erection scope with a total of 60,000 man hours without a recordable. With the lower portion of the Absorber and all of the Pre-Scrubber constructed out of duplex stainless steel (AL6XN) and the balance from 316L stainless steel, welding procedures and quality were monitored/ tracked under the highest of scrutiny. At the end of the project, we posted a less than 2% rejection rate on all welds. |
