Awards Presented at 2019 Quality Control Meeting
LAKE ZURICH, IL, June 17, 2019 – STI/SPFA presented various awards during the STI/SPFA Quality Control Meeting in April. The presentation included awards for quality and achievement in welding simulation.
Quality control is a crucial aspect of all manufacturing processes. Therefore, Member fabricators of the Steel Tank Institute’s licensed tank technologies are subject to periodic, unannounced inspections by a team of STI/SPFA Quality Control Inspectors. These inspectors conduct a rigorous investigation of the manufacturing function at tank fabricator facilities, to ensure that companies are complying with the standards and specifications for manufacture of each licensed technology.
Quality Award Recipients are chosen based on complete compliance ratings for our random QC inspections. The Quality Award is presented to recipient companies who have achieved three years or more with no quality inspection non-compliance points, to remind employees of their high skill level and encourage continued excellence. Fabricators are required to produce a minimum number of fabricated units to qualify as a Quality Award recipient in these categories:
- SILVER: Three consecutive years with no QC non-compliance tags
- GOLD: Five consecutive years with no QC non-compliance tags
- PLATINUM: Ten consecutive years with no QC non-compliance tags
- DIAMOND: Fifteen or more consecutive years with no QC non-compliance tags

During the opening reception of the Quality Control meeting, attendees have the opportunity to participate in a welding simulation contest. The simulator scores welding criteria such as travel speed, angle, throat, and overall weld quality. The 2019 contest had approximately 40 participants from STI member steel fabrication plants in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. The welding simulator is provided by Lincoln Electric of Cleveland, Ohio. The winner of the 2019 Herdman Cup was Shawn Owens, CEO of Paso Robles Tank, Inc. in Paso Robles, California.
The Herdman Cup honors Bill Herdman, a highly-respected industry consultant in steel fabrication and welding. He is regarded as a welding expert in this industry and was the recipient of an American Welding Society (AWS) award. Herdman started at Kennedy Tank in Indianapolis in 1958, and retired from Kennedy in 2009 as vice president. Bill was deeply involved in development of STI’s sti-P3 underground storage tank technology, and served with distinction on STI’s Technical Committee for many decades.
