Useful Information on the Design of Steel Bins and Silos

The purpose of this publication is to provide a practical design reference which addresses the typical design problems encountered in steel bins and silos.

A bulk storage tank is essentially no different than a liquid storage tank. The difference is in the nature of the product and its interaction with the tank shell. In many cases, liquid storage tanks have been converted to bulk storage with little or no physical change. Therefore, it is reasonable to apply many of the design practices, material selection, manufacturing tolerance requirements and rules of liquid storage tank standards to the design of bulk storage tanks.

Although there are a number of publications on the design of bins and silos, few of them offer guidelines on how to select proper materials of construction, how to deal with uneven product pressures on the walls of the bins and silos, how to determine the minimum anchorage requirements for flat bottom bins, or how to design large openings. This publication addresses these typical problems and offers some practical design guides.
