Buried Steel Water Pipes – External Load Design Fundamentals

The structural performance of buried flexible pipes depends upon pipe-soil interaction. Performance limit is excessive deformation which, theoretically, should be analyzed stochastically and should involve many variables including unknown construction loads, varied installation techniques, viscous and/or particulate mechanics of the soil, elastoplastic mechanics of the pipe, uncertainties of groundwater, etc. The analysis is complex.
