ASME Report: 2025 – 3rd Quarter
The new ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code was published on time July 1st. However, there are significant errors with Section VIII Division 1, including editorial changes, referenced paragraphs, and even some important technical issues. ASME staff, editors, and committee members are working to get the codes updated as quickly as possible. A number of errata have already been approved. If you subscribe to electronic versions of the Code, you should consider downloading the latest updates. For those with printed copies, it’s recommended to update your Code before the new Edition becomes mandatory.
On a positive note, the 2025 ASME Code Edition Updates webinar in June was fairly successful. Attendance was good, and I have received several follow-up questions since. I am always happy to provide my opinions if you have any questions. Keep in mind that I cannot speak on behalf of the ASME Committee—only official interpretations carry that authority. However, I am glad to help with clarifications and can assist in drafting interpretation requests if needed.
As discussed at our last STI/SPFA meeting, there are many reasons to consider a “simpler” Code book. The ASME BPV Section VIII Standards Committee has explored making changes to ASME Section VIII Division 1, believing there is market demand for more limited rules, supported by survey results and findings from the National Board. The final scope and execution of such an effort would require endorsement from the ASME Board on Pressure Technology Codes and Standards, the ASME Board of Governors, and additional industry input. These considerations will be discussed further at the next meeting in September.
Finally, don’t forget to share any ideas for future TechTalks. I’d be happy to provide details on topics you suggest.
