STI/SPFA recently spoke with Harri Sukhu, President at Structural Tank Equipment & Maintenance (Canada) Ltd. (STEM-CAN), about his career in the steel fabrication industry.

STI/SPFA: Tell us about the history of your company.

Harri Sukhu: STEM-CAN, established in Toronto, Ontario in 1952, continues to operate at its original location.

The company’s initial focus was on manufacturing home heating fuel oil tanks. Over time, STEM-CAN has diversified its product range which now includes the fabrication of carbon steel and stainless steel above-ground and underground storage tanks for flammable and combustible liquids, pressure vessels, and structural membranes.

STI/SPFA: How did you get your start in the industry?

Sukhu: My professional journey commenced as a quality control inspector, and through consistent involvement and ongoing education, I have progressed within the industry.

STI/SPFA: What do you like best about working in the industry?

Sukhu: Product diversification and continuous evolution of the industry.

STI/SPFA: What has been the greatest challenge in your career?

Sukhu: The greatest challenge arose when the industry reduced the percentage of sulphur in fuel oil, leading to the premature failure of single-wall infield tanks.

STI/SPFA: What advice would you give someone who is interested in working in the industry?

Sukhu: I strongly recommend that individuals working in this industry prioritize continuous self-improvement and stay informed about the latest standards and codes.

STI/SPFA: How has STI/SPFA Membership helped you and your company succeed and grow in today’s marketplace?

Sukhu: STI/SPFA has provided invaluable assistance in developing strategic thinking and planning frameworks for future growth and development.
