STI/SPFA recently spoke with Greg Brown, President of Malta Dynamics, about his career in the steel fabrication industry.

STI/SPFA: Tell us about the history of your company.

Greg Brown: Malta Dynamics was started in 2015 by construction and manufacturing leader, Damian Lang. Damian’s vision for the company was formed by his dissatisfaction with the safety suppliers and products he was getting for his construction companies. All our products are sent out and used on jobs before we put them up for sale. That’s how we say, “Field Tested, Field Approved!”

STI/SPFA: How did you get your start in the industry?

Brown: I have worked in a ton of different areas and industries, all over the country and every shift you can imagine as I was trying to carve my spot. While working my way up in a factory, I joined the company safety committee and really enjoyed it. In late 2017, I made the move to Malta Dynamics where I began to help companies with fall protection solutions.

STI/SPFA: What do you like best about working in the industry?

Brown: I’ll call my industry workplace safety, which is probably a little different than most here at STI/SPFA. My favorite thing is being a small part of the solution. Yes, we sell and market, and we look at inventory levels and shipping rates, and a ton of other factors and details, but what our products accomplish is putting more people at the dinner table at night, and less people in hospitals or worse. Not too many industries have that as an upside and it’s a wonderful thing to be a part of!

STI/SPFA: Who has inspired you in your career?

Brown: Mostly family; my dad was and still is my hero. I watched how hard he worked without complaint, how he treated my mother and provided for my brother and I, and it made me want to do the same for my family. Also, my wife and children root for me, they are interested in my work, and believe in me more than anyone else. It makes me want to do even better for them.

STI/SPFA: What’s been your favorite or most memorable moment of your career so far?

Brown: The most memorable moment for me is spending time and improving safety with the folks at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. So many hands went into the custom XSERIES unit we produced for them, and their job is so important, taking care of one of the most treasured and hallowed sites in our country. Helping these operating engineers progress from putting themselves in danger every day to working safely with Malta Dynamics gear was humbling and rewarding.

STI/SPFA: What advice would you give someone who is interested in working in the industry?

Brown: Get in there and do it! You’ll be around great people, learn valuable skills, and you can build a solid career.

STI/SPFA: What do you think will be the biggest challenge facing the industry in the next three to five years?

Brown: For workplace safety, I’d be ecstatic if OSHA fines, injuries, and fatalities due to falls would make its way down the list a few notches. I would love to see the practical use of a proper personal fall arrest system as common as safety glasses and hard hats.

STI/SPFA: How has STI/SPFA Membership helped you and your company succeed and grow in today’s marketplace?

Brown: It’s allowed us to get to know folks in this one industry, we get insight on what is important to you all in safety gear, and it will help us make better products.
