This water reservoir storage tank was designed and built for Cheyenne Wyoming and resides on a hill on farmland to provide adequate water pressure to the nearby community. This project was bid with a concrete alternative, and the all-welded steel tank was selected due to its economical advantages – which made it an ideal choice for the city of Cheyenne, allowing them to invest resources efficiently while still providing a high-quality water storage solution that meets the growing demands of the community.
The 107′-0 diameter, all-welded steel structure features a unique dome roof radial-plate layout that employed shop-welded radial stiffeners to minimize required seal welding of the underside roof seams. This innovative approach to this roof design not only simplifies the process of preparing the weld surfaces but also enhances the efficiency of field painting on the interior underside of the roof. One of the significant advantages of this dome roof design is the careful consideration of edge formation – effectively minimizing the presence of sharp edges in the vapor space situated above the water product. In traditional internally-framed column-supported cone roof designs, these sharp edges often serve as starting points for corrosion, leading to potential structural issues over time. However, the self-supporting dome roof’s unique design eliminates these vulnerabilities, thereby significantly improving the durability of the coating system applied to the roof. This longevity ultimately benefits the entire tank structure, ensuring that it remains resilient and reliable for years to come.
In addition to its advanced features, this tank employed our innovative FreshMix passive mixing system, specially designed to prevent thermal stratification within the tank. By ensuring that the water is continually mixed, this system enhances overall water quality significantly. One of the notable advantages of this process is that it helps maintain chlorine residuals more consistently throughout the entire tank. As a result, the potential issues related to taste and odor that can occur in water storage are notably diminished. Another critical aspect of this system is that it operates without any mechanical or moving parts, which not only reduces maintenance requirements but also ensures reliable performance over time. This combination of technology and design promotes a more efficient and effective water storage solution.
Finally, since this water reservoir is strategically situated on agricultural land that also borders a busy road, the exterior was coated in a bright white paint. This coloration was intentionally chosen to emulate the appearance of a fluffy cloud against the blue sky, creating a pleasing visual effect for those who pass by on a sunny day. This reservoir, constructed entirely of steel, is designed to withstand the test of time and will offer many years of dependable service to the City and its residents. In addition to its functional capabilities, the reservoir has been crafted to ensure it contributes positively to the overall aesthetic of the community. Therefore, whether individuals are driving by or taking a leisurely stroll through the nearby park, they can enjoy the sight of this elegantly designed structure, which enhances the visual landscape of the area while serving a vital purpose for water supply.
