Our company respectfully submits the Murphy Drive Pump Station project for consideration under the Steel Water Pipe Project of the Year – Pipe Fabrication category. This project exemplifies precision fabrication, strict quality control, and successful coordination in a highly constrained installation environment.
The project consisted of the fabrication and delivery of four (4) 36-inch Gross Steel Thickness (GST) pipelines, each measuring 38 3/8 inches outside diameter with a 1/4-inch wall thickness. The pipelines were designed with two inlets and two outlets and incorporated both exposed and buried applications within a short overall run. The total fabricated length of pipe was 240 linear feet, configured into four separate lines with eight hard tie-in locations that connected to existing infrastructure with varying outside diameters and butterfly valves.
All pipe was fabricated from spiral welded pipe using ASTM A139 Grade C steel coil and ASTM A36 steel plate. Due to the limited length of the run and the number of fixed connection points, the layout required a high concentration of joints and custom fittings to meet precise alignment and elevation requirements.
In total, the project included fifteen (15) fittings consisting of concentric reducers, mitered elbows, and tees. The system was assembled from sixteen (16) customized spool pieces, resulting in twenty-nine (29) total connection points utilizing flanged coupling adapters, flanges, bell and spigot connections, and butt straps.
Protective coatings and linings were applied in accordance with project specifications and industry standards. Buried pipe sections received AWWA C205 cement mortar coating at a 1-inch thickness and AWWA C205 cement mortar lining at a 3/8-inch thickness. Exposed pipe sections were coated with Tnemec Series N140-1211 primer at 3–5 mils and lined with Tnemec Series FC22 at 16 mils.
Quality assurance was a critical component of this project. All pipe joints, seams, and welds were subjected to comprehensive non-destructive testing, including Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), and Ultrasonic Testing (UT). The fabricated pipe not only met but exceeded the required minimum 150 psi working pressure and 225 psi test pressure, providing an added margin of safety and reliability.
Despite the complexity of the layout and the number of critical connection points, the precision of the fabrication allowed the contractor’s field crew, Archer Western, to complete installation without difficulty. The pipe aligned accurately with all existing connections, demonstrating the effectiveness of detailed planning, fabrication accuracy, and rigorous quality control.
The Murphy Drive Pump Station project is a strong example of high-quality steel pipe fabrication under challenging conditions. It reflects our company’s commitment to craftsmanship, performance, and collaboration, and we are proud to submit it for consideration as Steel Water Pipe Project of the Year.
