Horsethief Reservoir 2B

This AWWA D100 welded steel storage tank provides a 921,000-gallon capacity with a knuckle roof and conventional structure system. It includes a spiral stairway for safe and convenient access, along with a full roof platform and perimeter guard rail for maintenance.

This project chose welded steel construction for its proven advantages in large-scale water storage. Steel delivers exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, enabling this substantial capacity with efficient wall thicknesses while ensuring structural integrity under full load and environmental stresses. The field-welded design allowed for rapid erection on a challenging site, bringing the tank online faster than alternatives like concrete, which often require extended curing times. With high-quality protective coatings, this tank is built for decades of reliable service with minimal maintenance—steel tanks routinely achieve long lifespans, resisting leaks and degradation far better than other materials.

The tank features an internal passive mechanical mixing system at the inlet, engineered with an offset flanged nozzle to avoid the interior center column and promote thorough water turnover without mechanical issues.

As part of a comprehensive site upgrade, the project involved major hillside excavation to create space for the new tank, followed by construction of a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall for stable retention. The new tank was erected adjacent to an existing one, which we recoated simultaneously for uniform protection and aesthetics. We also redesigned site drainage to accommodate the expanded impervious area and paved the surroundings, improving runoff management, access, and overall safety.
