As part of an expansion to a water treatment plant, two new large water treatment units were fabricated, each with a nominal processing capacity of 1,400 gallons per minute. Each unit was shop-built in three sections to be installed by the customer as one integrated assembly, standing 37′-6″ tall.

At the bottom of each unit are two multi-chamber filter sections. These filter sections are mirror images of one another and are installed together as a single 16′ ID x 29′-6″ OD peripheral filter assembly. Internal piping spans radially throughout the filter sections. As part of the filtration process, 100+ round stainless steel baffles were welded to the floor of the filter. The walls and roof of each filter section included 30 structural stiffeners to support the dead load of the top detention tank. Tight internal clearances and numerous internals made for challenging out-of-position welding and surface preparation.

At the top of each unit, a cylindrical detention tank is installed, connecting to the filter sections. The detention tank measures 16′ OD. Internal piping runs from the top to the bottom of the tank, and stiffeners are fully welded across the floor. The roof also includes a support grid for a top-mounted aerator.

Both the filter sections and the detention tank are complete with a two-coat Tnemec lining system and an external prime coating. Twelve sections of rolled guardrail were also built for installation on the roofs of the units.

Each of these large units were finished on a tight completion date for a satisfied customer!
