Blast Effects Analysis for Fireguard Protected Tanks

The Steel Tank Institute contracted with a consultant, Karagozian & Case (K & C), to perform a finite element analysis of a 2,000 gallon Fireguard tank.  The analysis simulated three scenarios:

  • 10 psig vapor cloud explosion

  • 50 lbs. of TNT at 5 ft. – approximating a suitcase bomb

  • 500 lbs. of TNT at 20 ft. – approximating a car bomb

The results of this analysis are summarized in the attached Executive Summary of the report from K & C.

Note, that tanks designed to withstand these blasts will require anchoring.  For more information about the analysis and suitable anchorage, please contact Dana Schmidt at dschmidt@steeltank.com.
